Arab Champions 12.3

Who We Are

Arab Friends of Champions 12.3 is a regional network linked to Champions 12.3. Champions 12.3  is a coalition of executives from governments, businesses, international organizations, research institutions, farmer groups, and civil society dedicated to inspiring ambition, mobilizing action, and accelerating progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal Target 12.3 by 2030. Members are senior executives of these institutions, including ministers, chief executive officers, and executive directors. These executives preside over institutions that have the ability to impact food loss and waste reduction at scale and that are dedicated to meeting Target 12.3.

SDG Target 12.3

Responsible Consumption

Approximately 40% of all food intended for human consumption is lost or wasted from the point it is produced until it reaches our tables. This significant level of inefficiency carries far-reaching economic, social, and environmental consequences. The impact is staggering, with food loss and waste amounting to approximately $1.2 trillion (according to the FAO) in economic losses annually. Moreover, it exacerbates issues of food insecurity and malnutrition. The resources wasted on food that ultimately goes unused, such as water and land, are immense – accounting for about a quarter of all water used in agriculture and requiring land equivalent to the size of China. Additionally, this waste contributes to an estimated 8 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Become a Champion

Join and Make a Difference

To become a member of Arab Friends of Champions 12.3, it is essential to demonstrate active involvement in reducing food loss and waste individually, within your organization or externally. This includes adopting the Target-Measure-Act approach, which emphasizes setting specific targets, measuring progress, and taking concrete actions to address food waste.

Champions are expected to be advocates and spokespeople for the issue of food loss and waste within their families, communities, organizations or even global decision-making venues. This entails actively promoting solutions and best practices to drive meaningful change.
